Latigo Beach - A Surfer’s Oasis in Malibu, CA

At around the 7th-mile mark going into the city of Malibu, you’ll come across a sign that reads “Malibu: 27 miles of Scenic Beauty”, and you’ll soon see why. Malibu is home to arguably some of the best beaches and surf spots in the whole of California. Similar to some of the beaches in Palos Verdes, Latigo Beach is a less densely populated beach where you can get your surfs up in quiet serenity on most days.

As one of Malibu’s best-kept secrets, Latigo Beach is perfect for sunbathing, strolling along the shores with turquoise-blue ocean views, or engaging in some water spots. If you’re on the hunt for somewhere less crowded than Zumba beach or Malibu Lagoon State Beach, why not consider Latigo beach as an alternative destination?

Getting to Latigo Beach

Latigo Beach, Malibu, CA

Located about three miles North of Malibu Pier, Latigo Beach fronts a series of condo buildings along Latigo Shore Drive in Eastern Malibu.

Location of Latigo Beach Access

To find your way to Latigo Beach, look for a “Coastal Access” sign along Pacific Coast Highway that directs you to Latigo Shore Drive.

If you’re driving there, we’d advise you not to park on Latigo Shore Drive itself, as security guards hired by residents occasionally patrol the area. Avoid getting a parking ticket by parking along the spaces located on the Pacific Coast Highway or on the many other streets that are not marked as “Private”.

If you’re taking a Lyft or Uber there, the beach is located very close to the road so getting dropped off nearby and walking over shouldn’t be a problem. You can find the staircase down to Latigo beach right next to the row of condos.

Key Activities at Latigo Beach

Latigo beach is a surfer’s paradise because it contains one of the best point breaks in the area. However, this also means that you may come across more surfers than usual during peak seasons.

Latigo Beach is also popular for windsurfing or kiteboarding activities. It’s usually relatively calm here as the southeast-facing beach is shielded from the west by Latigo Point. At the west end of the beach is where you’ll find some exposed tide pools worth investigating during low tide. From here, it’s possible to continue heading West along the shoreline all the way to Escondido Beach. Towards the East side, Latigo’s golden sand extends towards Dan Blocker Beach.

As there aren’t any amenities like sun loungers on Latigo Beach, you’ll have to bring your own mat and other supplies if you’re looking to get your tan on there!

Can You Swim at Latigo Beach?

The entrance to the waters at Latigo Beach is very smooth, and the bottom isn’t rocky, making swimming comfortable and generally recommended. However, there’s still a chance of sharks in the area, so swimmers should still take caution. A lifeguard is also on duty at the beach at all times.

Waves at Latigo Beach are also typically strong, and there’ll only be several boats in the bay at any given time.

Must-knows before Visiting Latigo Beach

While Latigo Beach is open to public access, it’s also right in front of a series of beach houses, as we’ve mentioned. Hence, you’ll want to stay at least 16 feet from the first five units and at least 10 feet from the following 3. Be sure to heed the signs that designate spaces that are part of private property.

As there are no restaurants or cafes directly on Latigo Beach, make sure you remember to pack a snack or two before you head over!

When’s the Best Time to Visit Latigo Beach?

While there’s never a wrong time to visit Malibu, there are certain months when attractions and beaches are more crowded. Thanks to its mild year-round climate, though, temperatures generally stay in the 70s. This means you can even visit Malibu during the Fall to Winter months. Just make sure to bring or rent a wetsuit if you intend to surf during those chillier seasons.

In our opinion, the best time to visit Latigo beach is in September and October when it’s still sunny and warm for the most part, and some of the best waves are delivered. Temperatures average 77 degrees Fahrenheit, marking the beginning of the drier season in Malibu.
